Baltic Sea Exodus, Performance/ Film, 2 hours, Baltic Sea near Helsinki, Finland, 2022

I printed images of 83 disappeared women from Chinese social media and made them into a deck of tarot cards. I then scattered the cards into the Baltic Sea. I was sitting in the boat, blowing bubble gum and floating in the sea with them. Later, I retrieved some of them with a fishing net. As I started the performance, a sudden snowfall blanketed us and the entire area.

The Baltic Sea is regarded as "the sea of escape“ due to refugee escape during World War II by maritime archaeologist Mirja Arnshav. People from various countries cross this sea to escape the threat of death. Some of them survived, while others lost in this sea forever as they tried to escape.
